The Brief
Another stormy day is underway in North Texas, with the risk of severe weather bringing damaging wind gusts and large hail. After today, storm chances will decrease in the Metroplex, paving the way for a beautiful Mother’s Day.
Tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings were issued in North Texas on Tuesday afternoon. Those warnings have since expired.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued Tuesday
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of North Texas, including Rains County, Kaufman County, Ellis County, Navarro County, Hill County, Tarrant County, Hopkins County, Henderson County, Denton County, Hunt County, Somervell County, Johnson County, Van Zandt County, Collin County, Freestone County, Bosque County, Rockwall County, Dallas County, and Anderson County.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is also in effect for portions of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Meteorologists say wind gusts up to 65 mph are possible, along with hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter. Tornadoes are also possible.

A Flood Watch has been issued for parts of North Texas due to the potential for heavy rain. These counties include Dallas, Hunt, Denton, Red River, Cooke, Freestone, Anderson, Navarro, Wise and Henderson.

Widespread rain will blanket the area Tuesday morning as a strong disturbance moves into the Metroplex. In addition to flood concerns, there's a threat of damaging wind and large hail. However, the tornado risk is expected to shift south of the DFW area as the system moves through.
Once the disturbance clears, conditions should become relatively quiet and cool. Highs will remain in the 60s under cloudy skies.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is under a ground stop — again — with more than a thousand flights canceled or delayed Tuesday morning to and from Dallas airports.
The latest alert marks the second consecutive day of disruptions at one of the nation’s busiest airports. The culprit? A jammed-up weather pattern is poised to bring heavy rainfall, flooding, and even tornadoes to parts of Texas and beyond.
The pattern, known as an omega block, is named for the way the jet stream bends into the shape of the Greek letter omega — Ω. It traps a high-pressure system over the northern Plains, flanked by two low-pressure systems on either side. As the block shifts or breaks down, those surrounding systems are free to push stormy weather southward, including into Texas.
This stagnant system follows on the heels of a soggy late April and is expected to stick around for a few more days before clearing out by the weekend.
Severe weather has also disrupted operations at several other Texas airports, leading to more than 1,300 flight cancellations across the state, with additional cancellations expected throughout the day.
Weather-related delays are also impacting Love Field and Austin-Bergstrom International, and Houston's William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental airports.
Since early last week, DFW Airport has delayed or canceled more than 5,000 flights as waves of severe storms swept across North Texas. The region recorded 5.22 inches of rain in April, two inches above the monthly average of 3.22 inches.
When will flights resume as normal in Texas?
At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, a ground stop, which temporarily halts flights headed to the airport, was initially scheduled to end at 10:15 a.m but has been extended to 11:15 a.m. However, continued delays are likely if severe weather continues.
Currently, a ground delay remains in effect until 8 p.m., meaning arriving flights are being held at their departure airports due to limited airspace or ground capacity as storms move through the area. Average delays are currently around 76 minutes.

The Texas Education Agency is warning Fort Worth ISD that it is at risk of a potential state takeover.
This comes after the 2023 school accountability ratings were released a few weeks ago.
Failing Fort Worth ISD Schools
What we know:
TEA Commissioner Mike Morath sent a letter to Fort Worth ISD because one of the district’s schools received another failing rating.
After the long-awaited 2023 academic accountability grades were released, Morath said the Leadership Academy at Forest Oak Sixth Grade received an "unacceptable" rating for five consecutive years.

Several major North Texas school districts, including Dallas, Arlington and Fort Worth, saw drops in their academic ratings from the TEA. The 2023 ratings are released following a two year legal battle.
By state law, the district is required to either shut down the campus or have the TEA appoint a board to govern the entire school district.
However, things get tricky because Fort Worth ISD has already merged that failing campus with another school. The move was approved by the TEA.
The new accountability grades were withheld for more than a year because they were tangled up in a lawsuit filed by Fort Worth ISD and other districts across the state.
What they're saying:
"We remain focused on bold, strategic action to implement a restructured literacy and math curriculum framework that includes targeted training, high-quality instructional materials, and systemwide implementation. Together as a team, we are committed to equipping teachers with the resources they need and ensuring students receive consistent, high-impact instruction that accelerates learning and academic growth," Fort Worth ISD said in a statement in response to Morath’s letter.
What's next:
Fort Worth ISD said it will appeal the preliminary rating.
If it’s unsuccessful, the TEA could still come in and appoint a district board or close other campuses.
