$445 million investment will support global manufacturing of Lokelma

AstraZeneca today announces the unveiling of its newly-expanded, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Coppell, Texas. The expansion project will double the production of Lokelma for the benefit of patients in the United States and around the world.

The investment of $445 million to expand the facility follows the groundbreaking last week at AstraZeneca’s manufacturing facility in Albemarle County, Virginia. Both are part of AstraZeneca’s $50 billion investment in US R&D and manufacturing over the next five years that was announced in July 2025.

AstraZeneca’s Coppell facility is the sole global manufacturing facility of Lokelma to more than 50 countries around the world. The facility employs more than 250 people. Through the expansion and development of a new 9,000 square foot building, two novel manufacturing lines will be added along with enhancements to support drug substance and drug product laboratory testing, warehousing, additional manufacturing utilities and administrative space.

At an event marking the unveiling of the expanded facility, Learning Undefeated, an AstraZeneca STEM education partner, will also showcase their interactive educational mobile lab Breakout Box: Manufacturing Mission. Designed to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders by providing an immersive experience for students to explore the world of high-paying and high-demand manufacturing careers, the mobile lab includes everything from welding to data analytics and robotics and will be available to local schools in Texas.

The district says it’s facing an $8.5 million shortfall as enrollment drops and state funding remains flat.

COPPELL, Texas — The fight to keep Town Center Elementary open isn’t over, but for now, it’s on pause.

At Monday night’s Coppell ISD board meeting, trustees delayed a vote on whether to close the beloved campus until later this month — as early as Oct. 27 — giving parents, staff and district leaders more time to weigh the school’s future.

The evening began with something few expected: thanks.

“If my 5-year-old daughter who just started kindergarten would have asked why her school is closing, I would have not known what to tell her,” one parent told the board.

For weeks, parents have protested the proposal to shut down Town Center saying the data isn't comprehensive nor enough to shut down the school, but on Monday they also showed gratitude — applauding trustees for pressing pause.

Officials say they’re not closing the school because they want to — they say they have to.

Enrollment is down across the district, and with state funding remaining flat, trustees say Coppell ISD is facing an $8.5 million budget shortfall in the coming years. Closing Town Center, they estimate, would save about $1.4 million annually.

The district has been gathering community feedback for months — more than 11,000 people have submitted input or attended meetings on the issue. Leaders say inflation is up nearly 20% since 2019, pushing costs for labor, utilities and supplies far higher than reimbursement rates.

Parents and teachers argue that saving money by shuttering the school comes at too high a cost.

“Hearing that this school might close has really changed the way we’re thinking about our future here,” one resident said.

“TCE has the IT factor that every business hopes to create — that secret sauce that cannot and will not be replicated by someone else,” another parent added.

Instead of voting Monday, trustees discussed ways to grow enrollment and offset losses. The district unveiled a new initiative called “Cowboys United,” which aims to attract families back to Coppell ISD through expanded open-enrollment opportunities and new marketing efforts.

That includes encouraging roughly 700 school-aged children who live in Coppell ISD boundaries but attend private or charter schools to rejoin the district.

Still, district leaders admit more cuts are likely.

“You vote to close this school, there’s going to be different people sitting up here,” one resident warned the board.

While Monday’s delay gives Town Center Elementary a reprieve, trustees emphasized that the school remains under consideration for closure as the district searches for ways to balance its books.

A final vote could come later this month under the district's new superintendent, Leanne Shivers, who starts Tuesday.
